예전에는 정신지체(mental retardation)이라는 표현을 사용했었으나 어감이 좋지 않고, 여러 가지 부정적인 인상을 준다 해서 '지적장애'로 명칭이 바뀐 상태입니다. 누가 봐도 인지기능이 확연하게 떨어진 이들에겐 진단을 내리는 게 어렵지 않겠으나, 경계선 수준으로 지적 기능이 떨어지는 이들을 감별하기란 쉽지 않습니다. 카프란&사독 textbook 에서는 아래와 같은 특징들을 소개하고 있으며 감별해야 할 다른 질환들도 소개해 주고 있습니다.
